It was a Sunday of Erections and Beer - 16th May 2010

We are on the final stages of finishing the shack and today was a day for erections.... Two large erections to be exact and the beer had no part in causing any problems.....

Up went one VHF antenna and one HF antenna on the side of the building and most of the work was done by Mike, G4HZG.

Both antennas were donated to the club to get us going and may be replaced at a later date.

First Contact in the new shack - 29th April 2010

The new shack is in its final stages of being finished. In some simple antenna testing the radios were fired up and several contacts were made.

We had some interesting results including the ability to order the beer over the PA system downstairs by firing up 20m on the inverted V antenna. The barman was not impressed!

The Sommerkamp Receiver and Transmitter have also been returned to the Burton ARC. Restored by Geoff, G8EKG they are now fully working and taking pride of place in the shack.

The shack is soon to receive its new Yaesu equipment, so watch this space.

The club room work is progressing well - 11th March 2010

Burton ARC GeoCard, so where is it now? - 11th March 2010

Burton ARC has a GeoCard, it was placed in the cache at Waterloo Mount with a dog bone insulator attached to it.

We get the odd bit of feedback and so far our car has been to the following places..

Aug 3rd 2008 - Foremark
Nov 29th 2008 - Willesley water board reservoir, Nr Ashby
March 9th 2009 - Loordswood, Kent
March 20th 2009 - Cordoba, Spain

Thats it so far...

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache. More information at - http://www.geocaching.com

The shack electrics are in - February 2010

The Plastering has been done and the electrics are in. Paint is being applied over the next week and then the furniture will be added.

After that it will be a case of fitting the antennas and sorting out the radios.

Burton ARC. First ever Foundation Exam - February 2010

The first ever Foundation course was held at Burton ARC at its main site and was a great success. It was held over three nights at the Stapenhill Institute club.

Steve, M0KPO took the role at lead instructor.

Barry, David and Bill all passed with top marks

The shack is under construction - January 2010

The room has been cleared and now we need to do some work to clean it up.

Some plastering and construction work will be needed.

The plan is to build two work stations, one for VUF/UHF and one for HF

Antenna and radios have been kindly donated to the club.

If you can help during the refurbishment please let us know.

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month and the fourth Wednesday of the month at...

Exam Centre Approval - January 2010

Great news we now have two approved exam centres.

The Stapenhill Institute Club is our main site and is approved. We do have to consider wheelchair users however and this is the reason we have a second centre, to use if we need to.

Violet Way Infants School is our second centre. This however will cost us £12 per hour if we use it but the main advantage is that it offers all the facilities for the disabled and as so meets the RSGB criteria fully.

So in the unlikely event that we need to offer full access for a disabled person we can, the cost of the rental may/will be passed on to those that attend the course at the school.

Sharon, 2E0NBR, is the nominated exam secretary for the club. She will be responsible for the safe keeping and processing of the papers.
