The Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) is an annual event in which about 500,000 Scouts and Guides all over the world make contacts with each other by means of amateur radio.
This year's JOTA will have a theme; in 50 hours we will travel around the globe.

This golden-jubilee JOTA is 2 hours longer: the 50th JOTA will run from 19 October 22:00 h local time to 21 October 24:00 h local time.
An official start will be given by the World Scout Bureau radio station in Geneva on 19 October at 21:00 h GMT with a transmission in the 20 and 80 m band and on Echolink.
For full details see JOTA link here
The Burton ARC will be attending the local event. More details to follow. |

The new club banner makes its first appearance - 9th February 2007
Seen for the first time at the friday night club meeting, here is the image of the new club banner we can use at special events. At 6ft x 2ft, it should stand out well. The BARC logo was designed by Steve, 2E0KPO. Hardy Signs did a fantastic job of laying out the banner and printing it up for us. It was decided that the club call sign should be seen at all times and a box should be used to show off the callsign of the day at special events. This box is a size of a number plate so we can get a number plate made for each special event call sign.

Use of Two-Way Radio in Motor Vehicles - 28th February 2007
Mobile Amateur Radio Operation – Mobile Phones and the New Laws
The use of 2-way radio equipment (unless the device can also be used as a phone) when driving is not included in the new offence. It must be remembered that there is still a risk of distraction and prosecution under other laws should an accident occur.
If stopped by the police for operating mobile amateur radio, the reference to quote is:
The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) (No.4) Regulations 2003 Statutory Instrument 2003 No 2695. This lays out clearly the exemptions under the new law.
Statutory Instrument No. 2695 can be viewed at www.legislation.hmso.gov.uk/si/si2003/20032695.htm |

The first contest win for the club! - 22nd February 2007
It seems like a long time ago but last year Dave, (G0AOD) popped up to the Weaver hills, as one does for a contest. With the club call still very new and shiny he entered into the 6 meter UK Clubs contest in the qrp section.
Using his trusty HB9CV and 5 watts from the Yaesu FT-817 he managed to come 1st and the Cup Winners for the section.
Dave also entered the christmas cumulative's 2006 and won the open section with a score of 7529. Second place had 3907 and third place had 3000.
Taken over 4 days and on 4 bands and compiling 16 different logs all with small amounts of contacts.
Dave used his Icom IC-7000 on 6m with 100 w on his HB9CV antenna. 4m with 10 w on a 1/4 wave whip and 70cm with 35 w and 19 element Tonna.
Last year, 2005 Dave came 2nd so some improvement again. |

Sharon, 2E0NBR and SOTA Chasing - 3rd January 2007

Sharon hit 100 chaser points on the 2nd January. We have two very active members for SOTA, Summits on the Air, Sharon who chases and Steve, 2E0KPO who both activates and chases, Steve is now just 100 points short of 500 for chasing.
Certificates are awarded at 100, 250, 500 and 1000 points, 1000 points earning "Mountain Goat" and "Shack Sloth" status both require considerable dedication and effort. SOTA have recently introduced two new trophies can be claimed to mark this significant milestone. A 9cm x 9cm glass "Ice block" is made entirely by hand in the Scottish Highlands. Craftsmen create a unique "running scallop" along each edge of the raw glass so each trophy will be unique.
