Deregulation of CB radio and low power devices

Citizens' Band radio is set to be deregulated from 8 December this year, following changes to the Wireless Telegraphy Regulations 2006. CB operators will be able use their radio without the need to obtain a licence.

Ofcom has also announced that the use of certain low power FM transmitters, which wirelessly connect MP3 players to radios and in-car entertainment systems, will be legal for use in the UK from 8 December 2006. The transmitters will however have to meet stringent specifications aimed at preventing interference to other wireless devices.

The new regulations will also make more spectrum available to meet consumer demand for other low power devices such as hearing aids, alarm systems, tracking and tracing systems and meter reading devices operating in the 169.4-169.8125MHz band.

Ofcom today (1st December 2006) launched an online lifetime licensing service for ships’ and amateur radio.

The online licensing website can be found at: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/licensing/olc/

At present the online system covers Ship’s Radio and Amateur Radio licences.

  5. A printer available to print the radio licence
  6. The consent of a parent / guardian if you’re under 18 years of age

Ofcom Update

The new eagerly awaited Lifetime Licence was launched on Friday 1st December 2006.   The Radio Licensing Centre in Bristol stopped issuing licences on the 22nd November but continued to handle enquiries following an initial contractual misunderstanding that resulted in all enquiry lines being closed.

A number of RLC staff are being seconded to Ofcom for a temporary period to handle the inevitable increase in enquiries after the launch date.   It has now been clarified that the new Terms and Conditions will only apply to those licensees in possession of the new document but it is planned to send out over 60,000 paper copies over the coming few months.   Until this document is received licensees should still operate under the terms of their existing BR68.

Licensees wishing to operate under the new Terms and Conditions and who have not received the new document should register on the Ofcom website at http://www.ofcom.org.uk/licensing/olc/ This should allow the download of the new licence once your password has been received through the postal service.   These licences will then remain valid for an initial period of 5 years or until personal circumstances such as address changes need to be notified.

History Channel features Amateur Radio

The History Channel plans to run a new 13-part series in early 2007 on the Secret Life of Machines. One of the episodes will be devoted to amateur radio, in particular amateur radio in space.

Guests on the show will include Rosalie White of ARISS, an organisation that carries out amateur radio contacts between school pupils and astronauts on the International Space Station. She will talk about the role radio amateurs have played in the SuitSat-1 experiment and explain how amateur radio satellites are designed, tested and launched.

The amateur radio episode will  also highlight the work of school pupils who built five types of crystal radios and compared their qualities
