SOTA

Kinder Low G/SP-001
By Steve Warren, 2E0KPO
On the 17th December I decided to walk up to Kinder Low and get a few extra points for my SOTA.
Kinder Scout is a high windswept upland gritstone plateau, most of which stands at around 600 metres above sea level. The highest point is Crowden Head, which at 636 metres is also the highest point in the Peak District. This is the largest and grandest of the great upland areas of the so-called 'Dark Peak' and it forms an imposing and fascinating area.

Advice: Unsuitable for pushchairs. Suitable waterproof and windproof clothing, equipment and footwear required. BE SURE - BE SAFE.
In brief: Strenuous upland moorland, route covers tracks, paths and rough moorland paths and has steep ascents and descents. It reaches an altitude of 633 metres on a very exposed moorland plateau.

Taking the usual equipment with me such as my trusty FT-817 and also accompanied for the first time by my walking buddy 'Taz'. I have always been a little nervous about taking Taz on long walks like this as she suffers epilepsy, but now after almost two years of hard work the medication she takes has to a degree helped and I am a much more comfortable about taking her.

We started our day at Barbor Booth, there is a car park there, just by the railway bridge, and walked up the road for just over half a mile and then joined the main track.
Its a nice walk on quite well made up paths, Jacobs Ladder is about 1.7 miles in to the walk and the repair work the NT have done here has made a real difference, there is an option to take a left track but I wanted to walk Jacobs Ladder.

Taz showing the way
At one point you join a great flagstone path and this is a real asset for Kinder, there is no reason to wander off the track and do any more damage to the area, this path leads the way to the summit.
We had low cloud on the day and this made it very hard to see the Trig point so it was map, compass and GPS time to find the way to the summit.
A great moment, Taz at the 633m summit. She offered to take a picture
of me there but could not quite hold the camera
I made very few contacts at the summit but enough to qualify. My thanks to the following, with a special mention to G1KDU.. Equipment, FT-817 and telescopic whip, 1 dog bone
The weather was not the best on the summit, low cloud as I said, and this made it even harder to get back off the summit, thanks god for maps and GPS.
